Foundations of knowledge for graphics-illustratorMay 9th, 2018 / Graphics Basics
In this week’s post I would like to present you a short list of foundations of graphic-illustrator knowledge. In the following articles I will be developing in more detail the particular groups of topics listed here. I would also like to point out that the collection described below has been selected in terms of what turned out to be useful to me and is not textbook knowledge.
Basics first, then freestyle
Perhaps you are just thinking about taking your career path and taking into account the work of the graphic artist-illustrator? Or maybe you’re working in a different profession and want to change clothes? In both cases, it will certainly help you acquire the skills listed below, which I consider very important to pursue this profession. These are specific foundations that are really effective in many areas of creative work such as: painting, photography, computer graphics, drawing, etc. We will also get into competences, which are more typical for professions related to graphics.
Let’s start with the absolute basics:
- color management,
- advantages and contrast,
Then we can add skills related to the drawing:
- basic shapes and lines,
In addition, you can learn about different types of techniques – of course you do not have to be a master in each of them, but knowing at least a few will let you choose the favorite. Thanks to this, you also decide which one you want to use most often. Nothing, however, prevents you from having a few such.
- technology (watercolors, tempera, gouache),
- oil paints,
- color pencils / pencils,
Graphic programs – if you create your works using traditional methods, this point is not that important. However, when you create reproductions / prints of your works, the Photoshop basics will be useful. The basic criterion for the division of graphics software is the type of graphics created. That is why we differentiate between vector and raster graphics processing programs. The most important issues of both types are discussed in this article.
In addition to the previously mentioned compositions, color, lines and shapes, typography should also be mentioned.
A man learns his whole life…
In my case, such a set of skills worked very well. I use the techniques and acquired skills learned very often in my works and try to systematically polish them. In the following articles I will present you the methods I have used to develop this knowledge.
Right now I can with a clear conscience recommend a book entitled: “School of graphic design”, which will be great as a guide, if you are just starting your adventure with graphics.
As always, I encourage you to share your insights and experiences in learning about the foundations of graphics in the comment under this post. To read in a week!
